All-Terrain vs Highway Tyres in Kenya — Which Do You Need?

All-terrain vs highway tyres — a practical guide for Kenyan 4x4 and SUV drivers choosing between H/T and A/T tyres for Kenya mixed road conditions.

By KMAT Tyre Experts · Kenya Masters Auto Tyres · May 2025

Highway Terrain (H/T) Tyres — For Tarmac-Dominant Drivers

H/T tyres are designed for smooth, comfortable on-road driving with good fuel efficiency and low noise. Right choice if 80%+ of your driving is on tarmac.

Pros: Quieter, more comfortable, better fuel economy, better wet tarmac grip, longer tread life on tarmac.
Cons: Poor on deep murram, mud or loose gravel.
Best brands: Michelin LTX, Bridgestone Dueler H/T, Yokohama Geolandar H/T.

All-Terrain (A/T) Tyres — For Mixed Kenya Roads

A/T tyres are the most popular 4x4 tyre in Kenya because regular upcountry trips to Nakuru, Machakos, Kajiado or any murram road makes A/T the better choice.

Pros: Handles murram, gravel, light mud and rocky tracks. Good on tarmac. Good sidewall protection.
Cons: Slightly noisier on tarmac. Slightly higher rolling resistance.
Best brands: BFGoodrich KO2, Yokohama Geolandar AT, Hankook Dynapro AT, Falken Wildpeak AT.

How to Choose — Kenya Decision Guide

Your DrivingRecommended Type
90%+ Nairobi city and highway tarmacH/T — quieter, better fuel economy
60-90% tarmac + occasional murramA/T — handles both well
Frequent murram, gravel, farm roadsA/T — safety on Kenya terrain
Safari / expedition / serious off-roadA/T or M/T — do not compromise

Common Questions

Modern A/T tyres are much quieter than older generations. BFGoodrich KO2 and Yokohama Geolandar AT are particularly quiet. The noise difference from H/T is noticeable but not excessive.

H/T tyres can handle dry firm murram tracks. However for wet murram, sand or rocky tracks you risk getting stuck. A/T tyres are strongly recommended for regular Mara trips.

A/T tyres typically last 35,000-50,000 km vs 40,000-60,000 km for equivalent H/T on Kenya tarmac roads.
